Amanda Luffman CrossFit Coach/Owner

Coach/Owner Amanda has been part of the CrossFit community since 2012. Throughout her entire life she never played any sports or did much physical training but was always thin. When she was in college she went to the globo gym here and there and did some workout tapes but never spent too much time working out. In 2006 a doctor discovered Bone tumors covering 75 % of her femur and hip. She had metal rods put into her femur and hip to reinforce both bones. After over a year of physical therapy and walking with a cane she had lost any strength she had developed over the years. Even a day walking at the mall she would have a lot of pain in her hips and knee and she walked with a limp.

In 2009 she had her beautiful daughter Chloe, for the first time in her life she was not “just thin”.  She started doing all the Beach Body workouts, P90X, Insanity, P90X2 etc…   Although she had lost all the weight her joints could not keep up with all the bouncing (which lead to her second knee surgery) and she still did not have very much strength. She was also getting bored of doing the same workouts.

A friend had told her to try CrossFit.  She YouTubed a couple of videos and thought for sure CrossFit was out of her league.  After doing a trial class she was intrigued but still not convinced. Once she saw how easily everything could be scaled during foundations class she decided to jump in with both feet. From that day on she never looked back. Within her first year of doing CrossFit she built back the strength back in her legs and she couldn’t believe the difference.  Over the years the pain that had once kept her from walking distances was gone. She was jumping, running and squatting without a problem!

Three years later she was asked to Coach, so she got her CrossFit Level 1 and has been showing new people who are on the fence about CrossFit why they can do it and how she is doing it.  February, 2016 she found out she was pregnant and had to scale workouts and keep active throughout her entire pregnancy. Not only was it the workouts that have kept her motivated the family that has developed at CrossFit Lighthouse make it her pleasure to keep coming back!!

Daniel Luffman
CrossFit Coach/Owner

Originally from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Dan is a New Yorker through and through and a civil servant to the end.  Graciously serving our country in the Marine Corps once he finished high school, Daniel Luffman served honorably in Operation Desert Storm in the early 90’s.  After several years in the Corps receiving numerous decorations, Dan grew from a Rifleman to a Sergeant when he was honorably discharged.  Having served his country, Dan returned home to New York City to serve his home in the NYPD at the 70th precinct.  After nine years Dan continued in his pattern of promotions and became a Detective in the 70th Precinct.

In 2006, Dan moved to Long Island. It was at this point that Dan reached one of his greatest physical challenges. After years of performing at his peak physical ability, Dan was struggling with his own physical fitness. As a result, he began training at Bellmore Kickboxing Academy. Still wanting more, Dan joined CrossFit Merrick to keep training. After two years, he was inspired and achieved his Level 1 CrossFit certification and started teaching at Merrick CrossFit. In the last four years, Dan retired from the NYPD as a 2nd Grade Detective and in April of 2012, he started helping others reach their physical peak when he opened CrossFit Lighthouse. He holds a CrossFit Level 2 along with CrossFit Endurance, CrossFit Olympic Lifting, CrossFit Kids and USAW Level1 Sports Performance Coach Certifications.

Testimonials

*If you asked me a year ago why I go to the gym I would’ve told you to workout. But then in December of 2014 I stepped into Crossfit Lighthouse. The first day I walked in I was a cocky twenty-year-old kid who thought he was in great shape… That day was a huge wake up call. A 60-year-old man who I now know as “Frank the Tank” kicked my ass in the workout. At first I didn’t know what to think. Was I unfit, out of shape, or was I just plain pathetic? I expected the coaches and members to look down on me. However the exact opposite happened. Everyone congratulated me on finishing the workout and made me feel welcomed.

As the weeks went by I learned a lot about the facility. The equipment was of the highest degree and the coaches were inspiring. I got to witness what the coaches were physically capable of and I thought I would never be at their level. Even though I doubted myself the coaches always pushed me to do my best. Every single coach wanted me to get to the next level. I was inspired to be like them.

After spending an entire year with Crossfit Lighthouse’s state of the art facility and inspiring coaches, I have developed passion for the sport. I walk in everyday looking to push my limits. Crossfit Lighthouse has changed my life for the better and I cannot thank the owners, Jack and Dan, enough for creating such an amazing community. So now, one year later, if you asked me why I go to the gym, I would tell you its to spend time with my knew friends and family.*
